President's Message

Dear SCCHA Members,

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s already off to a strong start—just like our riders and their trusty steeds! We’re excited to share some highlights from last month and invite you to our upcoming gathering, where good food and great company await.

Soup Contest Champion – Stephen McHenry Defends His Title!

Last month’s Soup Contest brought out some serious competition, but in the end, one chef reigned supreme once again! A huge congratulations to Stephen McHenry for defending his title and taking home first place with his delicious Shrimp and Lobster Bisque. The rich flavors and perfect seasoning made it a crowd favorite, and we’re all wondering—will he go for a three-peat next year? Thank you to everyone who participated, brought their best recipes, and made the evening such a success.

Join Us for the February General Meeting – Friday, February 21

We’re keeping the good food coming this month with a spaghetti dinner, complete with garlic bread, salad, and dessert at our next General Meeting on Friday, February 21. This is the perfect opportunity to catch up with fellow members, stay informed on upcoming events, and share ideas for the year ahead. Whether you’re a longtime member or brand new to the club, we’d love to see you there! Sending a huge thank you to Jennifer Lien-Gonzalez, our Social Director, for making these general meetings so special.

Thoughts and Prayers for Southern California

Before I close, I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to acknowledge the heartbreaking devastation caused by the recent fires in Southern California. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost everything in these tragic events. As a community built on care and support, let’s keep them in our hearts and look for ways to help however we can.

Important Security Update – Board Contact Information

Due to multiple phishing attempts targeting our board members, we will be moving the contact information for our Board of Directors to the members-only section of our website. This change is being made to help protect our leadership team while still ensuring that members can reach out when needed. We appreciate your understanding as we take this step to improve security. If you have any questions or need assistance accessing the members-only section, please reach out to us.

With warm regards,

Tami Moore, President

General Meeting - Soup Contest

Our 15th Annual Soup Contest kicked off the new year by turning the cold winter night into a hot recipe competition! The clubhouse was full of members ready to take on the challenge of taste testing 10 of the best soups in town. As people mingled over friendly conversation and caught up on each other's holiday news, our distinguished cooks took their place in the serving line.  We had some of the most delicious offerings in recent years, which made voting very difficult.

We even had a few visiting folks, who are working on their membership, participate in the contest. It's great events like this that help keep our club growing! As people made their way to the dinner tables, you could overhear rave reviews as they began to eat. Some of the soup recipes brought back vivid memories from childhood and others were modern variations with unique ingredients.

Discussions focused on color, texture, spices and melding of flavors. In the end, only 5 could be chosen for prizes. Defending his title for 1st place, Stephen McHenry won with his Shrimp and Lobster Bisque. Jennifer Lien-Gonzalez took 2nd place for ther Cream of Pumpkin Soup. Nivi Ramakrishnan followed in 3rd place with her Vegan Thai Soup. Liz Kehoe won 4th place with her Meatball Soup and Ivor Castelino won 5th placw with his Opening Day Buck Chili.  As an added delight, Justine Whitney brought homemade sourdough bread for everyone to accompany their main course.

A big thank you to Yvonne, Jennifer, Linda, Shalla, Liz and Rachel for preparing and setting up the annual competition and drinks for an evening fit for the memory books.

I have had horses since I was 11 years old and started with a 4H pony at El Sereno 4H. After that I rode and trained my own QA and then an Arabian. I took the Arabian on the circuit specializing in Western Pleasure and some hunt seat. We did well. Then he retired and I started a family. Now I ride a mare I bred and trained. We like arenas but I love trails and camping the most!
